How antidepressant meds cause side effects
Sexual side effects are often linked to antidepressant medications, but research has shown that some types of the meds cause greater problems than others. Most prescribed antidepressants are part of a drug group known as serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs.
SSRIs raise levels of serotonin in the body which imparts a feeling of calm and lowers anxiety. However, the calmness has the potential to reduce the sex hormones, and prevent them from fully responding to sex.
